Renting moving trucks

Monday, February 15th, 2010

So you have packed everything in your house and you are ready to move! Of course, you would need a truck to bring your things to your new home.  MovinGood.com can definitely help you with finding a truck renting company that would suit your needs and your budget!

The first step is to determine how far you are moving and what size of truck you need.  Some rental agencies will charge a flat daily rate, including a determined amount of miles, while others will charge an inclusive rate. Know how far your old home is to your new home to determine the mileage that will be ran by the truck and imagine the size of truck you will need before you start your research so you can shop around and compare prices.

Remember, your truck should be large enough to accommodate everything you own plus 10-15% more. This is just to ensure that you are going to have enough room. Too much room is better than too little.

It’s also a good idea to determine how many days you will need the truck for, when you want to pick it up and whether it’s a one-way or two-way move. Many companies charge a premium price for one-way moves; this is to cover the cost or retrieving the truck.

Call at least 5 rental agencies to find the one that works for you. Remember that the cheapest agency isn’t necessarily the best one for your move. Ask the company what is included in the price and if there are any discounts available depending on when you move. Saving money can sometimes be determined by when you move. And you never know until you ask!

After deciding which company to use, go online or phone the agency at least two weeks before the move to reserve the truck. If you’re moving in high season (June 15 to September 1), try to book sooner rather than later. High season means higher prices and more demand.

Also, this is the time to book any additional tools you may need. This may include an extra trailer or towing equipment or moving dolly.

Before you sign-off on the rental agreement, make sure you thoroughly inspect the vehicle. Check for scratches, dents, bumps and anything on the interior that has been damaged. Make sure all signs of wear are listed on the inspection sheet. Also, the agent will record the current mileage and amount of gas in the tank. Check to ensure the odometer reading and gas levels are correct. Remember, after you’ve finished moving, fill up the tank before you return the vehicle. Agencies charge an average (usually high amount) for gas plus a service fee for filling.

Do’s and Don’t’s of interstate moving

Monday, February 8th, 2010

You have found your perfect home but it is 2000 miles away from where you are right now.  That means you need to do an interstate move!  It is important to research and ask around when seeking an interstate mover to make sure that you get the best rates that are available.  There are many moving companies on our site that will get you affordable quotes for moving.  Getting three to five quotes will definitely help you by giving you options and numbers to look at.

Keep these do’s and don’t’s in mind when relocating and hiring a moving company to take you across the country:

Do’s

  • Make inquiries about the company you chose to help you in moving before you sign the agreement or contract.  Ask to see the company’s credentials and past references.  Read reviews online if there are any.
  • Make sure you see how the company calculated all the costs. Have your contact explain it to you completely.  Ask to see a copy of the moving company’s tariffs. This will outline the maximum costs and how the costs are calculated according to weight and distance.
  • Ask about insurance. New federal rules state that a mover must offer you the option of purchasing standard coverage. Most insurance policies are based on weight, not value. Make sure you are fully protected.
  • Review all the documents the company provides and make sure you understand everything. If you don’t, ask the company to clarify. If you’re still not satisfied, take it to an outside party such as a lawyer.
  • Have someone at your old home for when the movers pick up your things, and someone at the new home for when they are delivered. Everything that goes on and off of the truck should be recorded and checked off.

Don’t’s

  • Don’t pay for the move until all your belongings have been unloaded into your new home. If there are any boxes or items missing, don’t sign the paperwork. The move must be completed before you sign.  Don’t sign anything that you don’t understand. Read everything thoroughly and ask questions when you need clarification.
  • Don’t pack items that are of high value, such as important documents, jewelry or account records. Take these items with you.
  • Don’t wait until a few days or weeks have gone by before you make a claim for damaged goods. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to prove mover fault.
