If you are starting to prepare for moving, one of the first things you will do is look for moving boxes. If you have asked moving companies what they charge for their boxes, you were probably in a state of shock when you heard the answer.  There is a reason - quality.

If you go online in search of moving boxes, one of the first things you will notice is that cheap moving boxes are advertised everywhere. But what exactly is a cheap moving box, and is it going to be of good enough quality to keep your prized possessions safe and sound during the move?

Some sites offer new moving boxes at a discount price that are of excellent quality and a great value. They are sturdy, corrugated cardboard boxes offered at a cheap price because the seller is buying in huge quantities. These companies buy millions of moving boxes and can pass the discount savings on to you, usually in the 10% to 25% range. These companies also buy overruns and irregulars from box manufacturers.

Then, there are cheap moving boxes that are of cheap quality. These are the ones you want to avoid. Check out the style of the boxes and see if they are similar to other moving boxes. Then find out what weight they can hold. All good moving boxes, even cheap ones, should be guaranteed to a test weight of 200 lbs. That doesn’t mean you are going to fill it to 200 pounds - it is just a standard method of rating boxes. Whatever rating it received will be stamped on the bottom of the box.

Cheap moving boxes might also mean used boxes. It is not a problem if a box has been used before. The question is how many times has it been used before. Most moving boxes are used once and then discarded. There are industrious people who actually collect these used moving boxes and resell them. They also collect UPS and FedEx boxes, which have only been used once, and ones from stores that sell items like electronics or shoes, which are known to be among the best quality boxes. If you can get moving boxes used once or even twice at a deep discount, it is probably a good buy. Many moving supplies companies that sell cheap moving boxes, whether new or used, guarantee them. Some also will buy them back after the move.

Now - about the sizes and types of moving boxes:

Small moving boxes are probably the most common when moving. They are 15x12x9 cardboard boxes, very lightweight and tough. They offer excellent protection for a wide variety of items: collectibles, books, hobby items, decorations and the list goes on. Moving box manufacturers usually ship such boxes to the customer as flat boxes, contained in a larger box (which you can also use to box up larger items).

Medium moving boxes have a size of 18x14x12. In general, all of the larger items mentioned in the list above will fit perfectly in these boxes. Kitchenware and appliances are the most common things to get packed into medium d moving boxes. Even heavier items, such as bronze statues, for example, may be packed with confidence, as the sturdy cardboard box will not fail unless extreme weight is present. The boxes are shipped in frame boxes which you may use to pack mirrors or any other type of large, flat item.

Large moving boxes have a size of (20x20x15) and hold larger household items, such as computers, stereos or videos. Bedroom items such as quilts, bedspreads, sheets, pillows and even lamps will also fit in such boxes. Toys and plastic or odd shaped kitchen items fit well in them too.

Extra large boxes (23x23x16) should be used for the largest items, especially ones that need extra cushioning. Some people prefer the larger boxes even if they have smaller items, as they can group them together by their own criteria.  Just remember how heavy a lot of little objects (like books) can get, and never overstuff a box.

Wardrobe boxes. These are usually 24x24x40 and they are similar to having your own mobile clothes closet. Use the room in the bottom of the box for purses or shoes. Some suppliers offer 3/4 d boxes for shirts, jackets or suits. Even after the move is finished, they are still excellent for storing winter clothing in your basement or attic. Hanger bars are available to fit in wardrobe boxes, making sure your clothes are never damaged or even wrinkled during the moving process.
