Rent-A-Truck

If you decide to rent your own truck or van in order to move, do not assume all rental trucks are equal. Quite the opposite. You need to make sure you lease from a reputable company and that the trucks are clean and safe. But more than that,  be sure to read all the fine print and know the stipulations.

Don't be like the guy who forgot he was in a big truck and pulled into the drive-through to get a soda and burger. Yeah, forgot about the canopy. Not only that, he chose not to put out the extra bucks for  the rental truck insurance. Didn't see the fine print on the rental policy that stated beyond any repairs there was also a $500 fee for hitting objects overhead. Uh, huh - ouch!

Before you rent a truck or van, look at the companies listed on this site by zip code. Just enter yours and click on the box. Then when you find a few closest to you, shop around. Be sure to ask them:
  • Are the trucks equipped with automatic transmission? A/C? GPS?
  • What s do they offer, and how to determine what you need?
  • What are the restrictions, if any - read the fine print!!!
  • Do they offer insurance (see incident above- trust us, you want it!)?
  • Do the trucks come with hydraulic lifts in the back or ramps?
  • What is the daily fee, or is there a per mile fee?
  • Do they have several locations or one-way options? Are the drop off and pick up points near to where you are moving from and moving to?
  • Do the trucks come with full tanks? Are you responsible for filling the tank upon return?
  • Ask if they also sell moving supplies. But before you buy them there, check out our list of mover suppliers to see if you can get a better deal.
  • Confirm also if it is extra to rent a hand truck, moving blankets, or hitches. Yes, you need moving blankets.
  • Check with your auto insurance agent and see if they recommend you purchase the rental truck insurance.
Finally, one word of advice. If you move yourself with a rent-a-truck, consider sparing your friends from the strained backs they will have or having to assist with their medical bills. In fact, save yours for the unpacking. You can hire movers for less than you think. Compared to your annual deductible or lost time from work, it can be a good deal. Oh, and please, watch out for the low clearance signs!
